Two-Fifty Tuesday, on Wednesday

I figured since I didn’t post this yesterday I’d back track a day and do a two-fifty post.

This verse is constantly tumbling around in my head. Something I adopted as “my verse” years ago.

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

That entire chapter is crucial on living the Christian life, on being a church, a staff, a community. What irks me is that so many times within the structure of what we consider God ordained we have people who insist on ignoring being like minding with Christ. People who thrive on rivalry, conceit and placing themselves before others.

I think we could all use a healthy dose of humility in our lives to bring us back down to earth. This applies to every Christian, especially lay leadership and more notably paid leadership. It isn’t our ministry, it isn’t our church, it isn’t our congregation, it isn’t our messages, it isn’t our worship, it isn’t our technology.

That is why in persecuted countries Christ prevails. They have no room for conceitedness. In America we’re lazy physically as well as mentally. Because this well oiled machine we built as church just works, we’re allowed to sit on auto pilot and receive the glory for it. I think maybe we should rethink the modern church structure and start over. The gospel does not change but we certainly need to, the goal is to to become like Christ.

It is not about you.

Two-Fifty Tuesday

Today’s goal will be to write a post in 250 words or less.

-Friday night prayer concert went really well
-I skipped a Halloween party with all people I don’t know because i’m partially a wall flower and dress up parties are awkward anyway…who didn’t have time for a costume? this guy.
-I had a lift blow a hydraulic line on me Saturday night. I wanted to laugh hysterically and cry at the same time…mainly because it’s happened more than i want to count.
-I drove said lift and watched hydraulic fluid spray everywhere, we’re talking epic 3ft streams.
-Sunday I had wanted to head out to actually participate in a church service at Houston’s First but set up ended up taking incredibly to long for a “not halloween” event we had for the youth.
-I laugh at people who freak out over Halloween being a pagan holiday. So is Christmas. I guess you could count hallmark holidays as pagan too…so out the door valentines, mothers day, fathers day and any other day pre-printed on your calendar.
-I miss authentic community and thank God for the times I do get to have it with some people I am around.
-I downloaded the new Good Charlotte CD today wishing for some good pop punk…I’m gonna keep wishing because that was bad.

I think I’m about done.

Tip Off Tuesdays

I am trying to come up with some regular blog posts to do weekly when I have nothing else to talk about. Tuesdays are for tips of the trade.

The yes/no rule.

I’m not going to say that I’m an expert here but developing the skill of saying yes and no in the tech and media field is a wise choice to make. So many people think because you’re a Christian that it’s ok for them to walk all over you, and that you must say yes. It is also a common thought that because you’re in a ‘service’ roll or a ministry roll that you must say yes to every little thing. While you should try and accommodate people as much as possible you also have to be careful that you set boundaries.

I watch a lot of people just say yes to everything. They run around trying to please absolutely everyone. In turn they end up burning themselves on both ends and hating life afterward. These are also the people who look down upon you if you’re a naysayer, like you’ve commited some carnal sin because you have limits. If you’re a yes-man please be careful of crapping on others because they’re not like you (it goes both ways of course).

Then there are those who say no to much. These people end up never getting asked to do anything because they won’t ever do it. They get a bad rap because nothing is ever possible, and if you do end up goading them into accomplishing something they do nothing but complain about it, and then end product is usually sub par. No is a good word to learn for the yes sayers, but those naysayers need to add a little positivity to their vocab or else no one will want to work with you.

I learned a little bit of something from the Original Star Trek series and Scotty the engineer. Always give someone a longer time frame than it will take to accomplish something and then finish it really qick. That way you end up the hero, you didn’t say no (its more like you met half way) and you worked a miracle.

So don’t burn yourself out, and don’t anger people consistently.

*edit*
You also need to be careful of the spirit in which you say yes or no. Because you can say yes in such a way that still communicates no and vice versa.

What do you struggle with more often than not? Saying yes to much? saying no more than you should?
