The question this week was posed, how should the church use twitter.
I may not be popular with this statement and you don’t have to agree, but I don’t think it really should. So here are some thoughts on that.
I am now beyond my second week at Seacoast Church in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and I figured I would give a little bit of an update that yes I made it and yes I’m alive.
The move was as expected, long and arduous drive coupled with an excitement to get there which equalled some lead foot on my behalf.
I dove right in, lots of new software and systems to learn. Meeting tons of people and forgetting 99% of their names.
God knew what he was doing when this opportunity opened up. I feel like I’ve slid right in and been here a while.
Seacoast is amazing, I have been able to attend services and that is absolutely huge!
Charleston is beautiful. I’m living on Daniel Island and have been running in the marshes, it is awesome. Downtown Charleston is one of those really cool historic places and Mt. Pleasant is a great coastal town.
I have yet to hit the beach or mellow mushroom but both of those are on the list to do very soon. Yes they are both VERY important
.
I do miss some aspects of houston, like family and friends and some food choices….like tex-mex, but I’ll live.
So I know I’m shy of 250 words but I need to get moving!

BLOG DOWN!
Ok well life has gotten crazy so I’ll give you the lowdown as to what has been going on.
I had summer hit hard with VBS, camps etc.
Shakespeare penned this over a century ago and yet it holds true to everything we do, copy, instigate or imitate as a church. Are we to be like everyone else? Are we to be on the cutting edge? Are we to desire to be better? Are we to be?
IMAG is short for Image Magnification or making things larger on a projection screen so you can see what’s going on far away like in a football stadium for a game or a concert.
My boss Rick and I went up to Dallas for a Church Tech Directors Round Table meet up.
It was a cool time to get together with a small group of Tech Directors, share passions, frustrations and the like and just be able to lean on each other. It really is a support group because working in a church is like a drug. It’s absolutely thrilling and addictive but it can tear you down too. It’s always good to hear other people are going through what you are currently dealing with, or have dealt with it in past whether tech wise, personality wise or life wise.
On top of the meet up Rick and I took the opportunity to go visit several churches in the area and lets just say…if it wasn’t for the highways I’d want to live in Dallas! There are some stellar churches up there. Lake Pointe Church with Jason Cole as their tech director has it going on. Several campus, a rockin system and solid teaching. We snuck in to Fellowship Dallas and had a look at their hall ways the building was locked up (yes we found an open door due to maintenance and snuck in) so we didn’t get any real cool sneak peaks but were impressed none the less. We got into Irving Bible church and loved the warm open atmosphere of their building. There were actually people WORKING and HANGING OUT in the lobby. Very cool atmosphere with lots of art everywhere. Again the auditorium was locked up tight, but awesome to look at the energy the place had and even talk to a member about how much he loves his church.
Last on the list was Gateway Church and lets just say, wow. I know that they’ve got some stellar worship with Kari Jobe who by the way we ran into at Starbucks while hanging out with Fellowship One’s Anthony Coppage. What I did not know about Gateway was just how much tech they’ve got going on, and how well put together it is. Their new Southlake campus has only been open a few months, and it still smells brand new. Not only does it smell brand new but it oozes professionalism, and tech goodness. It’s easily my favorite place I’ve visited and pretty sure it would rock your face off.
While visiting these places was seriously killer and made me drool over all of the tech goodness I walked away with some thoughts about processes for my teams, and the churches teams as we start looking into potentially starting a new campus and just try to streamline and bolster our tech process as well.
So thanks for the tours and talks my fellow techs.
Much learned and much appreciated.
Oh and if you’re missing a piece of gear just ignore it and know it is being put to good use.
In today’s market you have to do some really stand out things to get noticed.
It doesn’t matter what your job is, or what you know. Paper goes through a shredder, so the only thing that travels is word of mouth.
I’ve been asked before why I’m so easy to work with. I’ve been commanded a couple things, to live humbly and to show the grace that I’ve been given. If you can live by those two simple rules then you can work with anyone (almost, there are ALWAYS exceptions). This also goes to how you stand out.
Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Whatever project, meeting, conference, situation, etc that you are finding yourself in that person is the most important person in the world, no matter how much it pains you.
That is the word that travels about you. That is what make people stand up and take notice of you. Not that you have worked in the industry 12 years (or the required 5 years), that you’ve got a list of ink below your name that would make a college freshman blush or that you’re awesome, or can talk like you’re awesome.
Talk is cheap and a lot of people do it better than you. So walk it out, live it. Take a few simple rules in the Bible to heart, whether you believe it as truth or a good moral book those are principles anyone can live by.
99% of the people that do what you do are either on level or better than you.
It’s time to stand out.
I’ve posted on twitter a few times about my love for travel.
I’m getting the travel bug again, bad. More than just a wanton desire for an exotic vacation.
Yesterday I posted where I’d like to travel to for the first time, or go back to. Those places include but not limited to, England, LA, NY, Chicago, Australia, Seattle, Italy, Spain, and Germany.
I really want to go back over seas. It really is incredulous how much I’d love to travel the world, that would be a dream job.
What would you do for a job with your passion for worship design you might ask?
Help the global church find their passion for beauty in worship with media and art and music and to help the communicate effectively internally and externally. Why? because those are my passions.
I catch glimpses of what others are doing in their travels around the world with media in the church and it really begins to stir something in me. Who knows maybe one day this direction will be brought to fruition or maybe it is a dream that will push me and shape me and will blossom into something else entirely. I don’t really know.
I figured this is as good as forum as any to start a dialogue about dreams and passions.
What do you see yourself doing? Where do you see yourself going? Who do you see yourself helping?
What are your passions? dreams? Are they bigger than yourself?
Open Discussion, Go!
I figured since I didn’t post this yesterday I’d back track a day and do a two-fifty post.
This verse is constantly tumbling around in my head. Something I adopted as “my verse” years ago.
“Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
That entire chapter is crucial on living the Christian life, on being a church, a staff, a community. What irks me is that so many times within the structure of what we consider God ordained we have people who insist on ignoring being like minding with Christ. People who thrive on rivalry, conceit and placing themselves before others.
I think we could all use a healthy dose of humility in our lives to bring us back down to earth. This applies to every Christian, especially lay leadership and more notably paid leadership. It isn’t our ministry, it isn’t our church, it isn’t our congregation, it isn’t our messages, it isn’t our worship, it isn’t our technology.
That is why in persecuted countries Christ prevails. They have no room for conceitedness. In America we’re lazy physically as well as mentally. Because this well oiled machine we built as church just works, we’re allowed to sit on auto pilot and receive the glory for it. I think maybe we should rethink the modern church structure and start over. The gospel does not change but we certainly need to, the goal is to to become like Christ.
It is not about you.
I’m rethinking how to do this whole blog thing and I think for yours and my sake it’s going to be more short format. What are your thoughts on a blog from me? What kind of information do you want? I need feedback and I dont have anything to give away but my love
So from here on out stage design posts are going to be picture in nature. I’m going to try and describe the process in the pictures for you, but as always ask questions!
