I sat through a banquet asking for much money to be donated. I’ve seen things like that done well, I’ve seen things like that done not well and this was….not well.
It was a Christian group who I’ve done things for before in Houston. Apparently the leadership style tracks from state to state, city to city. Unfortunately it was a bit of a cluster that no one was prepared for. The keynote speaker bombed every joke, told stories with the word a$$ in it after telling everyone he debated to tell it (read awkward laughter here) and then money was asked for…but only if they thought teenagers were important. One of my favorite quotes was “We refuse to bore kids with the gospel”. Yeah that can be taken many ways, but with no backtracking or explanation, it was kind of par for the course.
Afterward instead of pulling together a team to help out the facilities crew to leave it as they found it, or close to it, they left (minus taking their useless stage decor with them).
Not a good impression left. That is for sure.
