With a move on the horizon and after talking with a few people keen on marketing it seemed like a good time to reposition myself, and grow up.

Apparently I’m not the only person who has thought this might be a good idea this week. You see netflix repositioning itself after some thought into its price hike and now the Southern Baptist Convention is looking at a name change as well.

So what is in a name?

A lot of people think your value as an individual/company/or product is in your name. I’m a church tech guy, at one point Peavy was IT when it came to church audio. Their name was great until their product began to become cheap. Then their name was mud. So was the value in their name or in the product and customer experience attached to their name?

I have no problem changing my twitter handle because the thing attached to it is myself. I am going to succeed more in explaining who I am as a person, rather than some ambiguous discriptor.

Netflix breaking its company appart may be pissing people off, but so was the price hike. They’re actually positioning themselves well incase they want to drop a lagging part of their business off. No one will miss the DVD service if it is no longer attached to the main brand. So the name change wasn’t detrimental, it was positioning.

The Southern Baptist Convention looking at changing their name is like trying to stomp on an ant hill to get rid of the ants. A lot of ants scatter around, but you’ve only covered up the surface.

There will be a ton of confusion with a name change for one. Second people don’t attend church at the “Southern Baptist Convention”. It is the name for a group of pastors, and the laws they hold to as a church. No individual church places their name sake within the SBC.
Soap box: The whole segregation within denominations is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. I could write a few thousand words on this one alone, but seriously, 20 sects of Baptists because they couldn’t agree on one small thing like communion cup size is a little extreme. Yes that was an extreme example, but its still kind of accurate.

People associate bad things with the word Baptist. Deal with it. People attend a church pastored by people who find their church bylaws in the convention. Churches who are pastored by these people are not required to even put Baptist in their name. It isn’t having the word that turns people away so much as how they feel when they attend. Church is about relationships, challenges, and life change. So there is nothing necessary about changing the convention name except to ruffle a few old feathers and get themselves in the news.

Your name doesn’t matter, but what you stand for does.

So whats IN your name?
