Earl Grey, hot.

Does your pastor have a ready room? A place where he sits and waits till he goes out, preps for his message, prays, changes,  etc.?

Do you pipe a live feed into his room so that he can see what is going on out on stage? An audio feed?

Our pastor has a “ready room” and it is aptly labeled. This is a place he can come and prep for the three services he does on Sundays. He has his own refrigerator, sink, bathroom, couch, closet, etc. There is also a TV sitting on a small stand where he can view the worship service so that he is not late to the stage if he chooses to hang behind during worship.

Today I had to trouble shoot that TV and the live feed. I checked all of the feed hardware to make sure nothing had come unplugged, next up was the TV. It was a Westinghouse LCD TV, my guess is a 32″. I turned it on and was met with a black screen and a squeal from the speakers. That isn’t right. I swapped inputs, squeal stayed, i turned down the volume, squeal didn’t change…yeah definitely not right. I turned the TV off…the squeal lowered but was still there. Uhhhhhhhh poltergeist? We had a storm come through last Friday so I’m assuming that we had a power surge and it took out the power supply on that TV. We had an almost identical one so I swapped it out, everything works dandy but now I’m thinking a surge protector might be a viable option on that sucker.

How do you make sure your pastor gets from point a to point b? does he know? do you have a stage manager? do you have a morning pre-production meeting? What about special speakers, how does that work? who briefs them? the production director? the worship director?

Tip Off Tuesday

splDo you have an iphone?
Are you an audio tech, an audiophile?
Then I’ve got a couple apps for you.
I’ve been stuck in a few situations where I’ve needed a way to analyze what is going on in a room audio wise. Whether just general loudness or a way to figure out why the room sounds so dang muddy or bright.

App one of two is an SPL meter.
This is a cheap app coming in at $.99 from Studio Six Digital.
It gives you the option of A or C weighted, slow or fast.
If you’ve got the gumption you can also connect an external mic up to the iphone and get a more accurate pick up.

One thing the app lets you know clearly is that the iphone mic has a roll off and so they try and make up up for it with programming. So you get around a 4-6 db difference from an actual SPL meter, but seriously, if you’re in a bind and need a ball park figure for those OSHA complainers pull out your phone and blow their minds.

The next app I haven’t gotten a chance to play with but am excited to have is Pocket RTA. It’s a little pricy ($29.99 to the SPL meters $.99) but it’s worth the investment.

This app gives you a nice real time analysis of what is going on in your space sound frequency wise. It gives you 8 different ways to analyze your room so you can tune whatever your doing and get rid of that mud. This is helpful when you know that your sound pressure levels are within an acceptable limit and you’re still getting complaints of something that is to loud. It’s generally a specific frequency or group of frequencies that are hurting peoples ears.

This isn’t a replacement for a professional room tuner, but for those of you who run audio tech consistently, especially in a church environment another tool in your pocket to make things sound better is invaluable.

Spit Shine Christianity.

What I am about to say is going to step on my own toes.

Now that the disclaimer is over I want to share something that I’ve been mulling over for the past few days. You might be wondering what I mean by spit shine Christianity. Did your mom, grandma, aunt, etc. ever lick her thumb or spit into a napkin to rub some kind of dirt off of you as a kid? You got spit shined. As a kid we always had to have that clean appearance whenever we were around other people (at home well that was another story). Back when leather shoes were more popular it also applied to polishing your boots/shoes. Had to have that nice pristine glossy appearance, whether or not the insides stunk to high heavens.

The modern day church clung to that spit shine mentality too. You have to dress a certain way in order to show up to church. A tie was usually required, but if not you had to have on some sweater or other excuse not to have one on. The hair, perfect condition. You look at old church photos and you don’t see anyone with a misplaced hair on their head, no long hair either. Church was all about appearance and numbers. You went out on the street every Saturday and proselytized your neighbors until every last one of them accepted Jesus under pressure of hell and then they jumped into the same cookie cutter you did.

As the church has progressed not a whole lot has changed. Some churches still adhere to the principles of old. You gotta look like a Christian in order to be a Christian. You gotta believe a specific formula of the Bible or else all bets are off. Then there is the flip side that has grunged up the church but still said now  you need to look at church this other way. This love way, this all encompassing grace way. People are dirty sinners and should just come as they are, don’t worry you’re covered. Problem is, while the thought pattern might have changed the principle of looking a certain way (and in this case non-conformist) has not changed.

Because there is so much emphasis placed upon man and what looks like, or what does not look like church, and what principle you should stick to, when someone falls it makes it all that much more difficult. It is so easy to end up focusing on the pieces that don’t actually matter so that we feel like we’re in control of this whole thing called Christianity.

Jesus had a few things to say about this, and for some reason none of it’s good. It all comes down on the religious leaders of the day. Don’t tell me the Bible isn’t relevant or applicable. It speaks to every day life, the phrase nothing new under the sun…yeah that’s this.

Matthew 23:13
But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.
15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

These church leaders weren’t doing very well in the eyes of Christ in leading people to love Jesus. They set the trap with some nice bait and then waited for someone to be drawn in only to shut the door in their face telling them they weren’t good enough to be a believer. You don’t look a certain way,  you don’t talk a certain way, you don’t non-conform just right. Then once the person does enough to convert their ways and they’ve ended up more lost than when they started.

Matthew 23:23
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

27
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.
28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

How many times do you hear messages that are all surfacy and feel good? Turn on tv and you’ll see a few. Download a couple podcasts and you’ll find a few more. God loves you and wants something better for you than the circumstances you’re in. I’m a sinner you’re a sinner but we’re all covered under grace. I’m not going to touch any offensive topics for fear you might leave the church, so just know that Jesus loves you.

White washing tombs? What’s that about? It’s kind of like white washing a fence. After a while the tomb started looking dull and lackluster so they painted the outside. Inside there was still a rotting corpse. Bones, cloth, jars of incense having long lost their smell. Inside there was still the presence of death even though they looked pretty on the outside.

Doesn’t that kind of seem like the church today/yesterday? Clean yourself up, come to church looking pretty because that’s how things work here. Inside you can be all ate up. Things can be all shapely on the outside and all out of sorts on the inside but it’s OK because you came to church and you fit what our model looks like. We won’t address your problems inside because it might make you or others uncomfortable. So just fill that pew ma’am and sir. We’ll take your money and occasionally serve you communion so that all is right in the world. All the while you just keep up appearances. You just make sure you’re getting counted in attendance.

I grew up in such a church. A lot of you are probably nodding your heads. I was inspected every Sunday and I had to wear my “Sunday Best”. I also went to a church were it was OK to wear shorts, cut off t shirts or whatever I pleased. No one would judge, now if I wore something obnoxious someone might snicker but all the same it was OK. But the message was still the same, look a certain way and Jesus loves you. Bring your bible, sing those songs and promptly attend whenever those good ‘ole doors are open. Otherwise you’re probably faking.

I can’t tell you what things are really supposed to look like other than what Jesus and the disciples laid out in the Bible (which should be our ultimate template). I can tell you that church today isn’t it…church yesterday didn’t exactly make the cut either.
Test truth continually against the Bible.
Let God clean out the inside because that is what matters.

Mute Math: Goodbye?

I bought the new Mute Math album.

I find it kind of funny…I find it kind of sad…the first album I heard from them was the best they ever had. I guess you could chalk it up to the sophomore slump, or that they’re solidly on Warner’s label now. Don’t get me wrong this is a solid piece of music, but that seems to be it, one piece of music. The album doesn’t have much get up and go considering their first release was all over the place musically. There is no drive or energy in 90% of the songs and the songs that have potential energy never see it released.

Armistice’s dynamics don’t actually exist, it seems like Paul Meany and the band wrote this during a massive relationship break up and forgot to let everyone else know why they’re crying. My first inclination during some of the songs was, if I was going to go cut myself I’d do it to this song.

Pieces that made the first album so enjoyable was the energy, the techno elements and the massive builds and drum break downs. The drums on this album are solid, but they’re predictable. The techno elements are minimal and the builds just aren’t there. As far as energy, it’s got energy if you’re melancholy. I’m not impressed, but im not disgusted either. Have you lost your way? because most of your songs kind of lean towards that on this album, and it would make sense.

I remember seeing Mute Math release their music at the GMA’s a number of years ago with such passion and energy it put everyone else to shame. Paul Meany talked about how he had come back to music with a renewed passion for God. Some of their music even related to Christianity (not that music has to, that is a debate for another day). Now with the attitudes seen in interviews and music taking a turn for the dark you begin to wonder where is that bright eyed band that told everyone they were back?

Can I have my mute math with a side of awesome sauce again?

Tip Off Tuesdays

I am trying to come up with some regular blog posts to do weekly when I have nothing else to talk about. Tuesdays are for tips of the trade.

The yes/no rule.

I’m not going to say that I’m an expert here but developing the skill of saying yes and no in the tech and media field is a wise choice to make. So many people think because you’re a Christian that it’s ok for them to walk all over you, and that you must say yes. It is also a common thought that because you’re in a ‘service’ roll or a ministry roll that you must say yes to every little thing. While you should try and accommodate people as much as possible you also have to be careful that you set boundaries.

I watch a lot of people just say yes to everything. They run around trying to please absolutely everyone. In turn they end up burning themselves on both ends and hating life afterward. These are also the people who look down upon you if you’re a naysayer, like you’ve commited some carnal sin because you have limits. If you’re a yes-man please be careful of crapping on others because they’re not like you (it goes both ways of course).

Then there are those who say no to much. These people end up never getting asked to do anything because they won’t ever do it. They get a bad rap because nothing is ever possible, and if you do end up goading them into accomplishing something they do nothing but complain about it, and then end product is usually sub par. No is a good word to learn for the yes sayers, but those naysayers need to add a little positivity to their vocab or else no one will want to work with you.

I learned a little bit of something from the Original Star Trek series and Scotty the engineer. Always give someone a longer time frame than it will take to accomplish something and then finish it really qick. That way you end up the hero, you didn’t say no (its more like you met half way) and you worked a miracle.

So don’t burn yourself out, and don’t anger people consistently.

*edit*
You also need to be careful of the spirit in which you say yes or no. Because you can say yes in such a way that still communicates no and vice versa.

What do you struggle with more often than not? Saying yes to much? saying no more than you should?

New music: Thursday

Would have worked better had it been new music monday…but it didn’t work out that way now did it.

Here is some new stuff I downloaded.

Cobra Starship: Hot Mess – Yeah I’m a sucker for poppy fun music, the starship hits warp five with this one, but this music comes with an explicit warning so stick some earmuffs on your kids.

Dance Gavin Dance: Happiness – Some haunting vocals and catchy music just round this puppy out…oh and the screaming is just an added bonus, it makes me all warm and fuzzy  inside.

Thrice: Beggars – never really picked much Thrice up before but I’m glad I did. It’s something different to add to the library. Some straight up rock.

Straylight Run: About time (EP) – just another little diddy to add to my library and I like it. Would like to see a full release from them.
I also put Mute Math’s new album on Pre-Order…and saw that Paramore is coming out with a new one too…ohhhh buddy I can’t wait for those.

Your Call

I’m just gonn say sorry for any misspellings or awful sentence structure. It’s 1:30am and I can’t sleep so I thought i’d share instead

This week at camp we’re going through talking about the students call on their lives to not just change their own lives but to be a change agent in lives around them.

We are called to change culture in one way shape or form. Whether in the forground or background. I figured I would take a second to share a bit of my calling.

In college I wrestled with my faith. I was a Christian, I was involved in highschool but in college I got burned out. I just wanted to sit on the sidelines, I was goin to heaven that was good enough.

After I graduated I landed a good job at a Christian organization. By this time I wasn’t quite as apathetic but was still indifferent in my walk, until the church I was visiting’s worship pastor came to me and told me that I needed to start running sound for them at least at a saturday night service.

I was heasantent because I knew I had never done anything like that before. Little did I know my world was about to be rocked for the next two years. The worship pastor poured into our friendship. I became so involved I was basically working my full time job and volunteering full time at church simultaneously. I lived for it and something changed in me. I became uncomfortable at work (I already didn’t like it but this was different) I felt such a strong call on my life to go work in church tech ministry that I about up and quit right when it happened. I met with kent the worship pastor and wanted to work at my church. That never happened but God was growing me. He wanted to make sure I was committed regardless of a paycheck.

After the two years of my job in a Chrisitian ministry being completely miserable and not beig able to take any more I prayed hard about setting a date and moving forward that something would come open. I didn’t look back I set a date a month or so away and the day came and I didn’t have a new job yet but I gave my notice anyways. It was the most liberating feeling.

Within about two or three months I had several interviews with some church in Texas and already had a resturaunt job in Ohio. Before I knew it this “some church in Texas” hired me full time to do youth technical production. I can’t say there has been a day Ive regretted this move or leap. It is exactly where God wanted me and has created and called me for. I wouldn’t rather be doing any thing else.

What’s your call?
